Risk Management

As volunteer leaders we have both a moral and a legal responsibility to provide a safe environment for the young people we are ministering to.  If you are responsible for facilitating ministry to young people it is important that you know the relevant risk management requirements.  We have briefly outlined the Church's ChildSafe and Safe Place Policies below.  To find out more contact LCAQD office on ph.07 3511 4000.

ChildSafe Risk Management System

The Lutheran Church of Australia Queensland District (LCAQD), of which LYQ is a department, is committed to the safety and well being of all children involved in our ministries.  To assist in creating a safe environment for all children the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) has adopted the ChildSafe Risk Management System for use in congregations nationally.

As leaders (volunteer or paid), who are ministering to children and young people and families in the LCAQD, it is important that you are aware of the ChildSafe system and how it can assist you to provide safe ministries to your community.

ChildSafe describes a standard of safety and care that everyone involved agrees to uphold.  The major focus of ChildSafe is keeping children, young people and families who participate in programs, safe from harm.  It is also concerned with the safety of others within a team.  As a Church it is essential that we care for the children and young people we encounter.  We need to;

  1. Analyse situations and prepare so that people experience the best we can offer.  To not prepare is not to care.
  2. Be very careful and deliberate about who we appoint to ministry roles.
  3. Respond to unsafe situations in an appropriate and efficient manner.

The ChildSafe system provides clear processes to assist in these areas and is based on the principle that those who care for children must act in the best interests of children and take all reasonable steps to ensure the child’s safety.

If you would like to know more about ChildSafe or the LCAQD's range of risk management policies and guidelines please contact the LCAQD office on (07) 3511 4000 or visit the ChildSafe website directly at www.childsafe.org.au

LCA Safe Place Policy

The Lutheran Church of Australia is committed to being a ‘Safe Place for All’ and maintains policies and procedures to support this principle.  The Safe Place Policy and Action Plan for Responding to complaints of sexual abuse and harassment equips members and contacts of the Lutheran Church of Australia to respond to sexual abuse and/or harassment.

The Safe Place Policy document:

  • Provides a defination of sexual abuse and sexual harassment
  • Identifies the people covered by the policy (paid and voluntary workers in a position of trust or a church role or position)
  • Outlines the requirements for congregations and the wider church with regard to screening and training
  • Provides a clear complaints procedure

The Lutheran Church of Australia’s Safe Place Policy and the ChildSafe Risk Management System work together to help ensure that our churches are safe environments for everyone.  The two policies complement each other; The Safe Place Policy provides a framework for appropriate adult to adult interactions and the ChildSafe system provides a clear framework for providing safe environments for children.
