VOLUNTEERING WITH LYQ

Join the Team

Thank you for considering the role of volunteer leader or facilitator for one of our 14 annual Camps. We deeply appreciate the invaluable contributions of our volunteer leaders—without your dedication, our Holiday and Leadership Camps would not be possible!

As a volunteer, your role is essential to the impact of our camping ministry, both on-site during the camp and in the planning process leading up to it. Volunteer leaders and facilitators help shape and bring our camps to life, participating in planning days and coordinating with their teams in the lead-up to the event.

Holiday Camps

LYQ Holiday Camps are more than just a bit of fun, or something to keep children occupied during the school holidays. Our camps are intentional. We pull together teams, train volunteers and plan programs that create a safe environment for our campers and leaders. A place where everyone feels loved, included, challenge and championed. More than that, we create spaces for people to encounter Jesus.

Christian Life Week (CLW) and Kids Camps

Our Kids Camps and Christian Life Week camps are designed to be a space for discipleship. The study content gives campers the opportunity to think more deeply and take their faith to another level. Daily worship features in both Kids Camp and Christian Life week camps, which we find is a highlight for many of our campers. Camp is often described by campers (and leaders!) as a “recharge” or “reinvigoration” of their faith.

Blast Summer Camps

Our Blast and Junior Blast camps are designed to be evangelistic. The programs and content are designed to help introduce Jesus to campers in a loving, gentle way. The camps provide the space for campers to explore who Jesus is, ask questions and hear from others about their faith journeys. While Kids Camp and Christian Life Week camps include dedicated time for Bible study and learning, Blast and Junior Blast camps offer offsite elective activities, providing campers and leaders with more opportunities for shared bonding experiences. We find that it’s easier to share Jesus with someone you have formed a genuine relationship with.

Leadership Camps

Leadership Camps is not just something you attend. It is something you grow through. These five-day immersive experience is designed for Student Leaders and Youth Leadership Teams to step away from the noise of everyday life and step into a space where they can discover who they are, who they are growing into as leaders.

Our volunteer facilitators are more than leaders, they are mentors, guides, and co-journeyers in each student’s leadership journey.

Roles on Camp

Our camp leadership teams consist of a variety of volunteer roles. Depending on your experience and qualifications, you may serve as:

  • a junior leader/facilitator (16-17 years old)
  • leader/facilatator (18+ years old)
  • camp parent
  • pastor or chaplain,
  • cook (selected camps only)

We also have camp directors and co-directors, who typically step into these positions after gaining leadership experience with us. Feel free to contact us to learn more about any of these roles.

How to Get Involved

Join our amazing team of volunteer leaders by logging into my.lyq.org.au and completing an Expression of Interest.

Once you have logged in, you’ll just have to scroll down to the volunteering section and click on “submit a new Expression of Interest” and select the events you are interested in volunteering at. This will help us understand the role you’re interested in and which camps you’d like to be a part of. After that, you’ll be guided through the application and training process, which are essential steps for volunteering with us.

As part of the commitment to being a volunteer leader, you’ll help your team plan the activities for camp. Many hands make light work, and it’s crucial that volunteer leaders collaborate with camp directors to create a fun, challenging, and safe experience for all participants.

Leader Certification and Training Process

Our application and training process is comprehensive for good reason – we care about the children and teenagers that we serve on camp. Our leadership applicaton and training occurs in two stages.

It might sound daunting, but it really isn’t that scary and the LYQ team are here to help you through!

Stage 1 - Leadership Certificate

Most elements of the application process are valid for 3 years including your leadership application, two references, an interview (usually conducted over the phone), a valid Blue card and Safe Church Training (run online through the Lutheran Church of Australia.) Recognition of prior learning is available for some elements on request.

Stage 2 - Leadership Training

Once your leadership application is completed and approved, you will be given access to complete some online training modules to equip you to be the best leader you can be!

Event Leadership Team Selection

Only volunteer leaders/faciliators who successfully complete the Leadership Certification and Training Process will be considered for leadership roles at Lutheran Youth of Queensland events. For the safety and wellbeing of our participants, we cannot allow anyone to volunteer at an LYQ event without completing their application and training in full. Your place on a leadership team cannot be confirmed until this is completed. When selecting leadership teams, we consider various factors, including but not limited to gender balance, leadership experience, and camper-to-leader ratios.

If you have any questions about being a volunteer leader/facilitator, any of our other camp roles, or about the application and training process, please call our team,
